The American Cowboy. With a spirit of rugged independence, they drove cattle through all manner of weather making a life on the open plains. In a time before barbed wire and accessible railways, the cattle industry relied on cowboys to keep herds safe and on the move. What the history books often fail to mention is the fact that one in four cowboys during the late 1800's was Black. For many emancipated Black Americans, skills in cattle tending gained while enslaved were suddenly in high demand and translated to gainful employment. While racism was very much a reality of society, in their cattle crews, Black Cowboys found comradery and respect among their white counterparts. In a profession where your life and livelihood depended fully on the hard work and dedication of each man on the crew, skin color simply did not matter. The quality of work spoke for itself. We're all familiar with the story of Rosie the Riveter - the iconic symbol of the millions of female laborers instrumental in the WWII war effort. However, what is commonly forgotten is the fact that over a half-million of these "Rosies" were Black. They worked alongside white women, building aircraft, ships, munitions and more in factories and navy yards across the country. They were railway conductors, clerks, typists, and office administrators. However, unlike their white counterparts, these women had to fight for the opportunity to work. Thanks to the efforts of labor activists such as Mary McLeod Bethune and A. Phillip Randolph, executive order 8802 was signed, banning discrimination in the defense industry and opening the door for Black Rosies to enter the workforce. But employment did not mean equality. These women endured racism and sexism in the workplace day after day. In time people began to refer to Black WWII experience as the "Double V Campaign" - the fight "for victory over freedom overseas and for victory over oppression at home". It is safe to say that without the contributions of these heroic women, victory would not have been possible. . .
